SPECIAL TRAMS

LOCAL PRODUCE MEAT AND BUTTER TRANSPORT TO NAPIER The Gisborne railway station has been particularly busy during the last few days, for, in addition to the dispatch of the Gisborne-Wellington express three times during the week, and the Gis-borne-Napier freight train leaving every evening and the southern one arriving every morning, there has also been a special meat train out every night. At present two overseas ships equipped to carry frozen produce are loading at Napier, and Gisborne district produce which has been held in the chambers at the Kaiti freezing works is going to fill the holds of one of these vessels. The special meat trains were commenced last week, and the one which leaves Gisborne this evening will be the fifth. It is estimated that four more will be necessary to transport the rest of the goods which will be this district's quota on one of the ships. The trains, which have usually consisted of from seven to 10 wagons, have been leaving Gisborne about 5 o'clock in the evening, and unloading at Napier the next morning. In all, 34,000 beef and mutton carcases will be dispatched from Gisborne this week by the special trains, while there will also be 6000 boxes of butter. It is expected that a further large quantity of frozen produce will be dispatched to Napier in about two weeks, when another overseas vessel is due there to load. Mr. F. Tolerton, manager of the Gisborne Refrigerating Company, said this morning that this year the meat and butter were being dispatched from Gisborne almost as quickly as they came into the freezing chambers.
