“POVERTY BAY”

Sir, —I noticed in your columns an article on the name of Poverty Bay by the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, who thinks the name should be changed. I claim that Poverty Bay suits Gisborne and that Captain Cook was right in calling it P.B. I was born there, and I can say there has been nothing progressive about the Bay since I was old enough to take notice of things. At one time there was a brick kiln on Kaiti. Where is it now? Also there used to be three freezing works; one remains. I say that for some people Gisborne is all right, but for others who depend on industry for a job I will say not. It is time we had a woollen mill, a pottery works and a jam factory so that men and women will have no need to leave the Bay to’ seek employment in other lands. 'When our city fathers put a few industries in Gisborne I would suggest they name it Progressive Bay. A. PITCHER, Tokomaru Bay.
