CHILDREN IN FACTORIES

MEDICAL EXAMINATION DEPARTMENT’S MOVE (P.A.) AUCKLAND. May 27. Steps are being taken by the Health Department in Auckland to provide lnedical examinations for all -children under the age of 16 who are employed in factories and re-examinations at the age of 16. This was mentioned in a letter from the medical officer of health, Dr. L. S. Davis, which came before the Auckland Hospital Board. He stated that provision for Ihc examinations had been made under the Factories Act and he asked if arrangements could be made for X-ray examinations. He estimated that about 700 children might have to be X-rayed during the year. The. boad decided that while it agreed in principle with the X-raying of all children, it regretted that, owing to present stall shortages and lack of accommodation it must, delay in taking part in the scheme until a mobile chest X-ray unit was provided.
