80-YEAR-OLD DESERTER FORGIVEN
LONDON, May 25. Moved by the recent appeals to deserters to give themselves up, a consciencestricken man of over 80 years recently reported to the police that lie had deserted from the army during the South African war in 1900, says the Daily Telegraph. He explained that this was the one serious blot on his character, and he had decided to take the opportunity to remove it. The police reported the case to the War Office, who searched the records and found the man’s statement true, but decided to forgive him.
