COMING OUT WELL
PORT TRADE YEAR IMPROVED FINANCES £3IOO AHEAD OF 1946-47 "The increase in receipts and. the decrease of expenses mark a definite improvement and the trade figures show that the port is picking up,” stud Mr. A. J. Nicol, chairman of the Gisborne Harbour Board, discussing at yesterday’s meeting of the board figures submitted by the secretary, Mr. E. A. Khull. The report showed that for the seven months of the financial year completed to April 30. imports were 27,727 tons, as against 24,346 tons for the same period last year, while exports were 10,038 tons, as against 8,877 tons. Receipts, excluding rates on land, totalled £19,653, as against £17,094—an increase of £2559. Expenses for the same period were £45,186, against £46',491—a decrease of £1305. Supplementing the information contained in his report, the secretary stated that after making provision lor accounts to be approved at this meeting, the board’s overdraft would stand at £20,725, as compared with £24,722 at the same stage of last financial year. He drew attention to the tact that £BOO in rents from the hoard’s endowment block had been received earlier than last year, and this offset to some extent the apparent improvement in the position; but nevertheless, he said, the actual improvement was represented by about £3IOO. The chairman commented that if the improving tendency continued until the end of the financial year in September the board should “come out rather well.”
