SUB-UNIONS SHOW STRENGTH IN RUGBY
TOWN SIDES FACED WAIKOHU CLAIM DRAW NARROW NGATAPA LOSS WAIROA DEFEAT NAPIER Sub-union teams of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union showed strength in two contests on Saturday. In a stirring game on the Tc Karaka ground Waikohu held the Gisborne representatives to a draw, 14-all, and in another keen struggle on the Gisborne Oval, The Rest, Gisborne, defeated Ngatapa by one point only. Fields were sodden with previous rain. Further downpours during the progress of play added to the difficulty of the conditions, the grounds becoming increasingly heavy and the ball as elusive as a piece of wet soap. Consequently the games became close-order struggles in which the hard-thrusting forwards of the sub-unions showed to advantage. In a Hawke’s Bay union game, the Wairoa sub-union defeated the Napier representatives on the latter's ground by six points to nil.
