HANDLING OF EXPLOSIVES WHARVES IN SYDNEY SYDNEY. May 24. The Waterside Workers' Federation has decided that from June 9 no explosives should be loaded or discharged at anv berth, except at the recognised powder grounds provided by the appropriate State authority. The decision applies to alj Australian ports and the Federal secretary says it will be strictly enforced as the federation was determined to pul an end to the wartime practice of handling explosives on wharves in built-up areas. The federation would not expose its niTinbers to the risk of disaster similar to that in Texas City recently.
