LORD HAREWOOD PRINCESS BEREAVED NEW HEIR TO TITLE (10 a.m.) LONDON, May 25. The death has occurred of the Earl of Harewood, aged 64. His wife, (he Princess Royal and members of the family were with the Earl of Harewood at his death. The news was immediately sent to Their Majesties at the Royal Lodge, Windsor, where they were spending the Whitsun holiday week-end. Death occurred at 11.25 p.m. G.M.T. on Friday, but was not announced till 3.30 a.m. G.M.T on Saturday. There will be no Court mourning for the death of the Earl of Harewood. Reuter's Court correspondent understands that arrangements for the luncheon at Buckingham Palace on Monday to celebrate Queen Mary's eightieth birthday will not be affected and also that the first presentation party, which this year ranks as a substitute for the Courts, will take place on Wednesday as arranged. Because of the clothing position, the King has decided the Royal Family need not wear mourning during the period of family mourning for the Earl of Harewood, " .

The Earl of Harewood had been in failing health for some time and went recently to Harewood House near Leeds. Neither he nor the Princess Royal, because of the Earl of Harewood's ill-health, were at Buckingham Palace to welcome home the Royal Family from their South African lour. Succession to Title George Henry Hubert, now Viscount Lasceilcs. who succeeds to the title, was a second lieutenant in .the Grenadier Guards. He was wounded and captured in Italy in June. 1944. He was a Counsellor of Stale with his mother and the Duke of’ Gloucester during the King's visit to South Africa. Viscount Lascelles is an undergraduate of Cambridge and went into residence at King's College as a freshman last January. The Earl of Harewood after being educated at Eton, entered .the British Army and served during the 1914-18 war "with distinction. He was thrice

wounded. He received the D.S.O. and Croix do Guerre when he was a captain in the Grenadier Guards. He was honorary attache to .the British Embassy in Rome from 1905 to 1907 and later accompanied the GovernorGeneral of Canada as A.D.C. On February 28, 1922, he married Princess Mary, only daughter of King George and Queen Mary. The Earl of Harewood inherited the estate of the late Marquis of Clanicardc, his great-uncle. He was appointed His Majesty’s Lieutenant for the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1927 and succeeded his father in 1929. He was installed as Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England in 1943.
