No Play on Soccer Ground
Owing to the Childers Road Reserve, Gisborne, being deemed by the controlling authority to be unfit for picy as a result of .the recent heavy rain, no play took place in the Association football and hockey matches arranged for Saturday. Death from Notifiable Disease There were two cases of diphtheria, two of pulmonary tuberculosis and four of bacilliary dysentery, making a total of eight cases of infectious disease notified to the Health Department in the East Cape health district in the week ended at noon today. There was one death from diphtheria. Three Degrees of Frost Frost registered in Gisborne this morning was 3.1 degrees at Darton Field. People interested in meteorological details may be interested to learn that a ground frost is measured from the minimum grass temperature of 30.3 degrees. That is, the grass minimum must be less than 30.3 degrees before a frost is recorded. An air frost, however, is from 32 degrees. High Pressure Readings Phenomenal pressure readings have been registered at Darton Field lately, the readings for today and yesterday causing great interest in meteorological circles. High pressure figures indicate the presence of fine weather and Gisborne at the moment is probably in the centre of a spell of such weather. The barometer at Darton Field read 30.43 on May 17. and that, together with this morning. s reading of 30.41, is distinctly unusual.
Recognition of Bravery Awarded by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand to Joy Brown in recognition of her courage and bravery in rescuing six children from a blazing Mahia house last July, a certificate has been received by the Mayor of Wairoa, Mr. C. V. Chamberlain. The Mayor has been in touch with the headmaster of the Mahia School and, with Mr. T. Omana, M.P., will be present for the presentation of the certificate, which will take place shortly at the school.
Transformers F»r Otahuhu Three more large transformers for the proposed new sub-station at Otahuhu have arrived at Auckland in the Port Line motorsbip Port Lyttelton from New York. They will be used to transform power generated at Maraetai and other stations further up the Waikato River from 220,000 volts to 110.000 volts. The largest pieces weigh 41 tons each and. when installed the transformers will each have a total weight of 75 tons and a height oi nearly 30ft. First Parliament The first Parliament of New Zea. land met in a building at the corner of Eden and Parliament streets ir Auckland 93 years ago on Saturday the initial session of both the House of Representatives and the Legislates Council beginning on May 24, This building subsequently became pari of the Auckland University College but it was demolished in 1917 to make room for the Anzac avenue roadway Twelve members represented Auckland in Ihe lower House at the time, while Wellington returned eight, Nelson six Canterbury five, and Otago and New Plymouth three each.
