FIREWORKS STAMPEDE
SYDNEY STORE RUSHED POLICE SAVE CHILDREN (10 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 24. Frightened children and fainting women figured in an amazing scene yesterday when a crowd of 3000 stormed the fireworks counter of a Sydney The employees sent a frantic call for the police and six burly policemen, under an inspector, struggled to restore for the safety of the children jammed against the walls, the inspectoi cordoned off the entire floor and ordered the children in danger to be passed over the heads of the crowd. Eighteen women fainted and were treated in tlie first-aid room of tnc Nearly two hours before the store opened, thousands of children after fireworks for Empire Day packed the streets outside. When the store opened a stampede began for the fireworks department on the third floor. The police were still on duty at 11 a m when the last of the fireworks were sold and the crowd dispersed.
