INCREASE IN WAGES
NEWSPAPER WORKERS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 24. Complete agreement upon the terms for the new award for the newspaper publishing and printing industry was concluded yesterday by the Conciliation Council, at which the commissioner, Mr. S. Ritchie, presided. The agreement provides for an increasff of 10s lOd a week in the wages of all journeymen, bringing the wage for compositors to £6 10s and that of linotype operators to £6 17s Gd, with the preservation of the established margins for other classes of workers. In a memorandum _ attached to the agreement it is explained that the increases include 8s 4d added in expectation of the increase in the standard rates under the Arbitration Couit pronouncement, and that in the event of a larger increase being made the agreed rates will be adjusted. The rates for female wagps are increased by ss, similarly subject to review after the Arbitration Court's pronouncement. Minor amendments were made in machinery clauses.
