Miss M. Clapeott. of the stall' of Woodford House School, who has been spending her vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. (1. F. Clapeott. Cobclen street, returned to Havelock North yesterday. Lieutenant. R. N. Akel, N.Z.M.C.. and Mrs. Akel, who have been spending a few days with the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. McM. Livingston, “The Reay,” To Aral Valley, left to-day for the north. The many friends of Ensign Jail Williams, F.A.N.Z., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Williams, Turihaua station, who joined up for service in England at the outbreak of war, will he interested to learn that she has been stationed in North Africa for the past live months. ENGAGEMENTS Bcdggood—Neill.—An engagement is announced between Sergeant Alban Louis Neill, R.A.A.F., son of Mis. L. E. Neill, Melbourne, and the late Mr. G. A. Neill, formerly of Gisborne, and Joan Maxwell, eldest daughter of Mrs. I. Bedggood, Vaughan street, Stratford, Victoria, and the late Mr. 13. B. Bedggood. Burton—Pudney.—An engagement is announced between Flight Sergeant Gerald Francis Burton, R.N.Z.A.F., third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Burton, Wanganui, and Pauliite, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Pudney, Kniti,. Gisborne. BAPTIST MISSIONARY UNION Business was dealt with under the direction of Mrs. S. C. Clare at the monthly meeting of the Gisborne branch of the Baptist Women's Missionary Union, held in the Sunday school hall. Palmerston road, on Thursday afternoon. The chief feature of the meeting was the installation as president of Mrs. Enright, whose husband, the Rev. Eric Enright, has recently been appointed to the charge of the Gisborne Baptist Church. Arrangements were discussed in regard to “Witness Week.’’ which will take place at the end of the month. Afternoon tea was served. SUCCESSFUL HOME GUARD DANCE A programme of modern and old-time dances, interspersed with vocal and instrumental numbers, together with community singing, was enjoyed by an attendance of approximately 350 at the second of the series of social functions held by the Gisborne Home Guard, in the City Hall, on Thursday night. The very adequate arrangements were in the hands of the battalion’s social committee, who had ample reason to feel gratified at the result of their efforts. Led by the Home Guard Pipe Band, a grand march, which gradually swept into a waltz, provided a spectacular opening for the function. The duties of M.C. were efficiently carried out by Sergeant-Major P. Hockley, and the music was supplied by the Home Guard Band and Mrs. W. Thomson’s orchestra, extras being contributed by the Home Guard Pipe Band. Community singing was led by Lieutenant C. F. Carter, A warm welcome was extended to the guests by the 0.C., Major C. A. Smith, who took the opportunity to express his pleasure in the occasion. A delicious supper was served under the direction of members of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary, who looked very trim in uniform. Among those present were guardsmen and their wives and friends, officers from the Armv Department, naval personnel, members of the Second N.Z.E.F., and representatives of the U.S. Marine Corps.
