QUEEN CARNIVAL
| TIKITIKI DISTRICT CROWNING CEREMONY The T.nvhiwhirnugi meeting hall, Tikiliki, was packed for the* coronation of Miss; Jean Yates as <iueen of the patriotic queen carnit va! contest which had been enthusiastically conducted in the Tikiliki, Rangitukia and Roroporo districts for some weeks in order to raise funds for these districts’ quota toj wards the Waiapu zone patriotic fund quota, i The unsuccessful candidates were Miss K. ! Manuel, representmg l’nmpnro, and Miss L. ; Hovel I, of RauvGlukia ! 'l’he setting for the coronation was unique ! in a hall widely known for its decorations of Maori carvings and other Maori art. The stage was set and in the baekgiouml a large Union Jack covered the whole of the wall and formed a tine setting for the ceremony. 'J’he proceedings opened with short addresses of thanks for the spontaneous and generous assists net' in the carnival contest by Mr. Humana Mahuika. chairman of the Tikiliki patriotic committee, Mr. J. Manuel for the Poroporo queen committee, Mr. YVhare Haerewa for the Tikitiki queen committee, and Mr. A. (I. Hicks on behalf of the l zone committee. I Mr. A. G. Hicks, secretary of the Waiapu Zone Committee, acted as court chamberlain ami conducted the proceedings. The coronation procession proceeded from the front door of tile hall to the stage to the accontn .niment of slow march music by the Home Guard orchestra. The stage was arranged with the “queen*' on tin tin one, respleiidanl ; in royal robes, together with Misses !.’. Manuel and L. Hovel) as princesses **. i either side, and Miss T. Te Miha. Mrs. P. Maraki ' and Miss A. Haig- as maids of honour, the i pages, Misses T. and Kura Walker, Kururangi. Josie Green and Wawatai. Miss Tuck, W.A.A.C., Miss Karalm, W.A.A.F., Mr. Hicks, and Captain I\ Tninpu. Captain 1 Taiapii carried out the crowning ceremony in j an able manner. The “queen" then conferred “honours" on Mr. Humana Hahuika, Mrs. I. Manuel, Mrs. iM. Gilmour, Mrs. Kururangi, and Mrs. i Kereama Tuhaka. Presentations of lockets wore made to Ihe “queen" and the “princesses," together with artistic Maori kits and exquisite bouquets to all the ladies. The queen expressed thanks for all who had helped in the carnival aim the two unsuccessful candidates for theii friendly competition and help.
