PUBLIC SERVICE PAY

MINIMUM RATES RAISED As the result of representations by the combined public service organisations, states the latest issue of the Public Service Journal, the Government has decided to increase the minimum salaries of married male officers whose maximum was less than £260 a year as from January 1; 1942. Provision has now been made, as from September 1 last, for minimum scales as follows: —For officers employed at an annual remuneration or at an annual rate of remuneration, £243; for those on an hourly basis, 2s 4d; for officers employed at a rate otherwise fixed or computed, a rate proportionate to the annual rate. The additional pay is by way of allowance, and superannuation contributions are to be deducted from the amount. Overtime is payable on the increased rates.

An increase in salary up to £l3 a year was granted a few weeks ago, to date retrospectively to January 1, to all male employees with a maximum salary less than £260 a year, so long as the salary was not thereby increased beyond £255. In addition, small increases were made in the steps of the salary scales, in most cases of £5 or £lO. Public servants receiving up to £355 a year were allowed the equivalent of the 1940 cost-of-living bonus, and last April those receiving up to £765 were granted £l3 a year, with smaller amounts for juniors.
