LIBRARY SCHEME

LOAN COLLECTION specialised Books An offer by the Country Library Service of a loan collection.of specialised. books was discussed.'By the committee of the 1 . Gisborne Public Library at the meeting on Thursday., . This offer was the result, of an inquiry by Mr. M. A. Nixon, of the IntiStippdiate School, regarding books suitable for a specialised teacher’s library.. However, if the project proved popular, other organisations in the district might be able to obtain books in this way. The collection, which . would be housed at the Public Library, .would be available to all residents and not merely to subscribers. The librarian stated that an, experiment with, a loan collection Of engineering books had been made at the Lower Hutt Municipal. Library and had proved a great success. There was no reason why . the scheme'.should not prove equally popular in Gisborne. It was difficult for a Public Library with a relatively small book fund, to eater for the reader who wanted technical books for. which the.demand was verv limited,, and the. scheme was an excellent method of overcoming this difficulty. On the motion of the acting chairman, Mr..R. ,W. J. Edwards; the committee decided to accept the offer of the Country Library Service, expressing appreciation of the inauguration of this new co-operative scheme. The : chairman, commenting on the librarian’s monthly report, pointed out the marked increase in juvenile and rental subscriptions. r| £ During, the month the library received from Mr. B. S. Bree a donation of two valuable editions of Cary’s translation of “Pante” and one of Milton’s "Paradise Lost.” The committee expressed its appreciation, and a vote of thanks to Mr. Bree for his gift was recorded.
