LEVY BY TAXATION TARANAKI PROPOSAL DIRECT GIVING FAILS (P.A) ...NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. A resolution from the Taranaki countv patriotic committees favouring the rasing of patriotic funds by taxation, was supported at a meeting o! the Taranaki Provincial Patriotic Committee at Stratford, when the matter was discussed at length. Only one member voted against the motion, „ Nfr. S., Vickers moved the, following resolution,, which was forwarded by the ; Taranaki. County...-Committees: “That the council delegates, to the November- Conference urge that , the funds.. '.-required 'by the Nations 1 Patriotic Board and the provincial patriotic councils ,be. raised by taxation and that the existing patriotic organisation....be retained- and given control of the moneys collected.” '. Mr.. Vickers said lie considered it hecessdry for taxation to I be substituted. Direct giving had failed and. as the money had to be raised,' taxation was the best means. The collectors had to depend* ori the same givers throughout the district and some people thought that if. they .had, given 2s 6d 0r,.5s they had given enough. Others invested .in .national, savings bonds, blit.that, was not giving as: they would get returns for their investments There were-filacek in Taranaki;- said,Mr,-Vickers,--where they had a system of levies and they had done well in .getting their..-quota.
