HOSPITAL RATE POLICY The Uawa County Council, at its meeting on Friday, discussed several matters in connection with the policy of rating lor hospitals. The council confirmed the action of Ihe chairman, Mr. J. McNeil, supporting the Gisborne Borough Council’s letter to the Local Government Loans Board explaining reasons for the objection to the hospital loan. The council also supported the Waikato Hospital Board’s proposals that payments to the hospital boards from the social security funds should be substantially increased. Support was given to proposals from the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies’ Association for special legislation concerning refunds connected with emergency and temporary hospital accommodation. , The action of the chairman in submitting the names of Messrs. A. Donald and M. Doyle to the policy committee in the Poverty Bay Transport Control District was approved. A communication from the Counties’ Association urged that work done by county councils should be declared essential, but, on the motion of Mr. A. Donald, seconded ;by Mr. D. H. Hawkins, the council expressed itself as not in favour of the proposal. The council decided to apply for membership of the Auckland Sailors’ Home at a fee of £1 per annum, and to donate £5 5s to the Gisborne-East Coast Y.M.C.A. . ’ The county engineer was instructed to install a new culvert on the Mangatuna bridge crossing. Those present at the meeting were Mr. J. McNeil, chairman, Messrs. A. Donald. D. H. Hawkins. A. H. Reeves, C E. Smith, and P. T. Weeks.
