FORCES BOARD APPEALS MEN IN LAST BALLOT Men drawn in the latest ballot have been the subject of appeals at this week’s sitting of ,the Gisborne Armed Forces Appeal Board. The reservists were all employed on farms, and in many cases were the sole employees on the farms. V. Taylor, farmer, appealed on his own behalf against general service. In support, Mr. F. W. i Nolan said the reservist was a sheepfarmer on 323 acres at Otoko. The only other labour employed was during the shearing season. The reservist was a member of the Home Guard. The application was supported by the Primary Production Council, for whom the chairman, Mr. W. G. Sherratt, appeared.— The decision was held over. The general service of P. G. Downey, student, was appealed against by C. G. Downey. Mr. F. W. Nolan said in support that the appellant had previously applied for the release from camp of ano'tner son, D. Downey, but because the reservist had been engaged in a specialist unit of the army, the board’s recommendation was turned down by the military authorities. The appellant asked that P. G. Downey, instead of undergoing training during 'his university vacation, be retained for farm work. —The board decided to grant the exemption asked for.
J. L. Reeves and Company sought the exemption from general service of A. H. Reeves, station manager. Supporting the application, lytr. F. W. Nolan said the reservist managed three properties of a total area of 7200 acres worked in conjunction. Since the war the staff had been reduced by half and the reservist could not be replaced.—The appeal was adjourned sine die, the reservist to stay in the Home Guard. Agricultural Contractor’s Work The National Primary Production Council (Mr. W- G. Sherratt) appealed against the general service of R; M, Fisken, agricultural contractor. MrSherratt said that so far this season the reservist had ploughed 237 acres of land and had 80 still to do, Last season he shelled over 26,000 sacks of maize and baled over 23,000 bales of hay, and it was expected that this would be increased this season- In* eluded in the work to be done was the harvesting of 300 acres of wheat, arid a simiiar area in peas and beans. C. H. Cooper, chairman of the MaizeGrowers’ Association, said the reservist was indispensable.—;A sine die adjournment was recommended. The estate of C. S. Pyke appealed against the general service of C. R. Pyke, sheepfarrrier. In support, Mr. W. G. Sherratt said the Reservist was required as manager on Rawiri station, an area of 1821 acres, carrying 5375 sheep and 550 head of cattle. —The board adjourned the case sine die, the reservist to stay in the Hpme Guard. The release from camp of K. S- G. Rudland, stockman, was sought by the National Primary Production Council (Mr. W. G. Sherratt) .—Leave was recommended immediately to January 31. F. C. Shaw, sheepfarmer, appealed on his own behalf against general service. Supporting the appeal, Mr. W. G. Sherratt said the reservist was farming 851 acres'at Rakauroa on his own and in addition assisted on the estate of C. J. Shaw.—A sine die adjournment was recommended, the reservist to stay ini the Home .Guard. On his own behalf; R. A. Burgess, farmer, appealed for a postponement of his general service. The , reservist said he required an extension of time to January 31 in order to dispose of his stock.—The board granted the extension. ■ ■'• Mrs, D. Stevens appealed against the general service of J. R. • Stevens, a labourer with the Public Works Department at Bartletts. The reservist said his wife was appealing for his retention because of her ill health.— The appeal was adjourned for review in three months. '
