WAR AGAINST JAPAN ASIATICS UNIMPRESSED ENEMY PROPAGANDA (10.30 a.m.) CANBERRA, Oct. 17. It would be utter madness to regard the Pacific war as a side-show to the defeat of Germany. Unless we also defeated Japan, it would leave us in an impossible position. This statement was made by Mr. Keith Officer, former Charge d’Affaires at the Australian Legation in Tokio. who has returned to Canberra after an exchange with Japanese diplomats. Mr. Officer said that an encouraging impression gained was that the native population of the Japanese-occupied countries were not greatly impressed with the Japanese propaganda that they were coming as deliverers. He thought, however, that it was essential for the United Nations to make clear their oost-war intentions to the peoples* of south-east Asia, otherwise Japanese propaganda in these countries might be successful in certain quarters. , „ The Japanese had treated the staff of the Australian Legation strictly correctly but. the treatment of nonofficials varied.
