MAKARAKA NEWS

PATRIOTIC SUB-ZONE The annual meeting' of the patriotic committee of the Makaraka-Matawhero-Makaurl sub-zone was held on Monday night, when the secretary tabled a comprehensive balance sheet on the past year's operations. The quota to the Cook County had been fulfilled, besides sending away 87 parcels and entertaining local soldiers. The expenses with the social functions had been heavy, but the net profit was worth while. Arrangements were made to give assistance at the A. and P. carnival on October 31. The retiring chairman paid a tribute to the work and co-operation of members and extended thanks to the various donors to the patriotic funds and to the ladies’ committee for their work in connection with the social functions. The election of officers resulted in a strong committee being returned, with Mr. Jonnsen as chairman and Mrs. C. H. Baigent as secretary, the latter taking the plnce of her husband, who is joining the armed forces. Mr. Jonaseti paid due credit to the retiring secretary, Mr. C. H. Baigent. His workhad been outstanding, and the committee regretted losing his services. Privates Ron Livingston and R. Dailey are spending their leave in the district.
