NEWS OF THE DAY

Water Wastage The excessive use of water in Gis-; borne which causes so much trouble during drought periods was put in a new light by the Mayor, Mr. N. H., Bull, When addressing a public meet-, ing last night in regard to the loan; proposals to be placed before the ratepayers on Saturday. According; to records taken, the average daily consumption in the reticulated areas is 100 gallons per head of population, and this, in the opinion of Mr. F. W. Furkert, who reported on the proposed Mangapoike scheme, is almost double what is 'reasonably .'required. Mr. Bull added that if a family of six consumed 100 gallons per head per day and had to rely upon tank water, the family would empty a 600-gallon tank each day. Even deducting an allowance for commercial use, the amount for domestic purposes was still excessive. ,

Man-power Registrations Substantial numbers of registrations of men between the ages of 51 and 59 years have been received at the Gisborne man-power office, and the secretary, Mr. V. .Walker, said that some doubts had been caused in regard to exemptions from fegistraticns. Those not requiring to register were those who had already registered under prior orders and the personnel, including those of the nonuniforhied branches,- of the army, navy arid : air‘ force, as well as police arid doctors. Mr. Walker said that many bad been hesitant to register because; they feared thCy might be immediately liable for trarisferi elsewhere, but each case wOiYld be decided on its merits, "arid there was no intention to denude the district of valuable men. though if an emergency arose men with the necessary qualifications might have to go elsewhere, Medical and family reasons would be taken into account. In every case, volunteers were accepted first for any transfers.
