RECRUITING RUSH
YOUTHS IN AMERICA 18-19 AGE GROUP YIELD AIR FORCE EXPANSION (10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 15. Boys aged 18 and 19 years are crowding into recruiting stations throughout the nation. The tempo of recruiting has been accelerated to a marked extent as plans were speeded up in Washington for the drafting of 18 and 19-year-old youths. The acceleration is most noticeable at Army offices, but the Navy authorities said the bulk of their enlistments were youths in their teens. Lieutenant-General Hershey, Director of Selective Service, said that a draft of the 18 and 19-year-old groups would yield 1,200,000, but an additional 1,000,000 married men will be called up to meet the army demands in 1943. The American Air Force will be more than doubled in 1943, said General McNarney, deputy-chief of staff before the House of Representatives Military Affairs Committee. He added that the total strength of the Axis armies was estimated at 8,755,000 to 11,400,000. General McNarney refused to reveal'the comparative strength of the forces of the United Nations.
