SKIN-DRYING PLANT : WESTFIELD WORKS FIRE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, this day. • Damage estimated at about £IO,OOO was caused this morning at t.he Westfield Freezing Company’s works when a fire destroyed the skin-drying plant, which is part of the wool and sheepskiftt; ; department,- adjoining the slaughtering block. A good save was .made by the company's volunteei*' fire brigade, in conjunction: with a numbey of suburban brigades. The manager of the company, Mr A. G. Bryan, said that the cause of the fire had not been discovered, biff it was believed to fine to a fault in the installation. The damage might have been greater had the fire occurred at the height of the season. Pie said that production would not be held up, and the damage would be repaired before December, when the skin-drying operations would be most needed. A ‘returned Maori Battalion man. Mr. Robert Hammond, who was work - ing at the far end of th? plant, felt unaccustomed heat and saw smoke He 1 immediately rang the alarm. Twenty-one members of the company’s fire brigade played a prominent part ir suppressing the fire.
