N.Z. MAN-POWER NEEDS
SERVICES AND INDUSTRY OPEN DEBATE LIKELY (P.R.) WELLINGTON, this day “I am hoping to be able to discuss: the man-power problem in the open House as far as possible,” stated the Prime Minister, t.he Rt. Hon, P Fraser, in the House of Representatives yesterday, after a notice of a question on the subject by Mr. J. A Lee (Dem. Lab.. Grey Lynn), in conjunction with the member for Napier. :he Hon. W. E. Barnard. Tile notice was as follows: “(1) Whether the Prime Minister will forecast the man-power require ments for 1942, 1943 and 1944 for all services and give Parliament an opportunity of considering the proposal; in advance so- that members may have a voice in shaping rather than ratifying the policy. “(2) Whether, prior to the industrial mobilisation of men of the 51 to 59 years of age class, the Prime Minister will make a statement as to the Government’s policy in relationship to the retail trades, setting out the measures pf protection to be given to small traders and the methods of recompensing the owners of one-man businesses who may be industrially conscripted and the methods of safeguarding their trading rights on demobilisation ”
