CHILE MAY ACT
UPROOT NAZI SPIES ARGENTINE. PROTECTION AGENTS OF AXIS POWERS (11 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 14. The Christian Science Monitor’s correspondent in Washington says that immediate action by the Chilean Government to uproot espionage, which has already cost' the United Nations many ships and men, is expected. Informed quarters here simultaneously stated authoritatively that the situation regarding Nazi activity is becoming woi’se in Argentina. There is positive and unimpeachable evidence that the Argentine Government recently took di'astic steps to pi'otect the Nazis from counter-action by private citizens. This openly undemocratic gesture is considered here to give the Germans a greater measure of support than they ever enjoyed in Argentina. The information shows that the U.S. Under-Secretary of State, Mr. Sumner Welles, had abundant justification when he made the charge in Boston that the United Nations are being stabbed in the back by Axis emissaries in Argentina and Chile.
