SERVICE APPEAL ARMED FORCES BOARD At to-day's sitting of the Gisborne Armed Forces Appeal Board, a baker, A. Torrje, appealed against • general service, and aS a result'the appfeal was adjourned sine dip, the reservist to remain in the Ifome Guard. Mr. F. R. Ball presided at the sitting, and.with him were Messrs. J. E. Benson And ‘C. E.' Bickford.' In support, Mr. K. A. Woodward said, the‘reservist was:the manager of the Irresistible Bakery, "Which had been in existence' for" 20 years and owned by the; feservjst for five years. He baked over 2200 loaves per week and worked from 65 to 70 hours. In addition to the reservist there was a baker and ah apprentice in the bakehouse, besides another youth who drove the van between the bakehouse and the shop at Gladstone road. .Walter Findlay,"manager of "the 'Gisborne Bread Deliveries Company, said that bakers were hot 'available and' with the strict, control of bread it was necessary to retain the reservist.' "'
The district' man-power officer, Mr. V. G. Walker, applied for the release from camp of D. 11. Buscke. The reservist was required from October It) to December 31 for mustering for the shearing season at Tahora station. The secretary of "the appeal board, Mr. 1. S. Wallace, said that the reservist had been called in the 'first' ballot, and as a result of previous appeals, he had received only three weeks’ training. .A fetter had been received from the commanding officer of a military camp stating that the' reservist would be released pending the board's confirmation. —Immediate leave- was recommended to December 31. Leave for Student I), C- Robinson, a student, sought release froth'camp. Mr; A.-T/Coleman shid'in support-that the 'reservist had been a pupil of the Gisborne High School until August this year, and was desirous of continuing his : - studies in order to sit for the university entrance examination. • The rector of the Gisborne High School, 'JJ Hutton, AVrote supporting the ■ appeal.—lmmediate leave was recofnmended to December 31. ' On ’his own behalf, G. I. Shanks, sheepfarmeiy sought release from camp. In support, Mr. A. T. Coleman said 1 that the reservist had been manager of a" property which, during his absOhCe, was being managed by ! N. Backhouse. ••• The • latter was a carrier and would be required for transporting wool from the various stations to the railhead at Dtoko until the end of January, and in the meantime- the reservist would be required to manage the station.—Release was recommended immediately to January’ls. ' E. A. Horden,' the employer of A, Horden, farm hand, applied for the latter’s release. The appellant required the reservist for three months to assist in the shearing on his property at The Willows.—The decision was held over for two days.’ —' ‘ A'postponement for one month of his" general service was'sought by a solicitor,'K- A. ‘ Woodward, who said that his call-up had been sudden and he required the extension to attend to his affairs.—The board granted the adjournment asked for, from October 21, the date of the call-up.
