ALTERATION OPPOSEP '.GISBORNE lXc. DECISION Holding to the belief in the system of taxation according to the ability to pay, the Gisborne Labour Representation Committee, at this month’s meeting. carried'the following motion:“Tliat we urge upon the Government not to yield to any-pressure that comes from local bodies and vested interests to change die present incidence of hospital taxation by placing the whole costs of hospitals upon • the social security fund." It was stated that this would inevitably mean that an increased charge would be made on all wages and salaries aiid that wealthy landowners, shipping companies, insurance companies and other big businesses would be relieved of the payments of large annual sums at the expense of the masses of the people, including small ratepayers. The committee decided to send a copy of the resolution to the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, and the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer.
