MALE CATTLE PRICES FEMALES REMAIN FIRM FAIR AT MATAWHERO Values for male store cattle at the Matawhero fair to-day were easier than at the previous fair, but although female cattle were a little more diflicult to sell the high values for them remained firm. The outside buying strength was not nearly so strong as at the two previous fairs of tiie season. The first, early last month, attracted one of the largest benches of visiting buyers known in the yards, the greater part of the grazing area in the North Island being represented, and taking values to the peak levels of the war. At the second fair at the end of last month, most of the southerners were absent, with fewer buyers from the north, while to-day the only ones operating were a very few from the Waikato. Local buyers, however, came more into the picture than earlier in the season.

Yearling and,two-year-old steers made up the greater part of the entry to-day, and it was in them that the biggest easing was noticed, although the older male cattle offered aiso would have brought better money three weeks ago. The size and condition of the male cattle was not good in the main. The offering of female cattle was small, and values kept up, although the auctioneers had to work harder for their bid 3. The condition of moßt of the females was a little better than among the males, and a few nice pens came forward. The offering totalled 2500, of which 1750 were offered before lunch, and the fair was confined to the one day. Prices ranged as follows: — Males.—Yearlings, £4 15s to £5 19s, with some of the better pens unsold up to £0 ss; two-year-olds, £6 10s to £8 ss, with several pens passed in from £6 4s to £7 14s; threeyear steers, £8 2s 6ct; bullocks, £9 9s to £lO.
