OBITUARY
MR. J. F. A. HANSEN The death of Mr. John Frederick A. Hansen occurred ' at his residence in Rutene road last nignt after a short illness. Mr. Hansen was born in Denmark 88 years ago and came to New Zealand with his parents. On the voyage out from Denmark the sailing ship was wrecked and after drifting for several days was towed by a German ship to Cuxhaven, where the wrecked ship was refitted. Many of the colonists were discouraged by the shipwreck and cancelled their sailing, but the late Mr! Hansen’s father and family of six decided to continue the voyage to New Zealand. They arrived at Napier in 1874. Mr. Hansen’s father came on to Gisborne to work as a cabinetmaker for the firm oi Messrs. Large and Townley. Mr. J. F. A. Hansen took up farming and followed this occupation until his retirement 15 years ago. He farmed properties at Makauri, Waimata, Kaiti and Hexton. In 1881 he married Miss M. McDonald, Gisborne. Four of his sons fought in the Great War, two paying the supreme sacrifice.
He leaves to mourn their loss four daughters and six sons—Mesdames T. Fraser and F. O. Bruce, Whangara, Mrs. G. J. Moore, Te Hau-o-te-atua station, Mrs. T. M. Hansen, Whakatane, Mr. C. O. Hansen, Gisborne, Mr. F. Hansen, Tikokino, Hawke’s Bay, Mr. L. Hansen, Anaura, Mr. R. Hansen, Hexton, Mr. H. L. Hansen, Whangara, and Mr. Leo Hansen, U.S.A, There are 42 grandchildren and 10 great-grand-children. The funeral will leave Cochrane’s chapel at 2 p.m. tO-morrow for the Taruheru cemetery.
