EFFECT OF HUGE BOMBS SYDNEY, Aug. 21. Massive bombs, which had .to be hauled to the planes by tractors, were used in ci recent Allied rftid on Lne, New Guinea. Manv of the pilots, who had not used such bombs before, were delighted with their effectiveness, reports B. J. Anderson, Sydney Daily Telegraph war correspondent. One pilot said: “When we unloaded them on Lae everything in, the vicinity where they landed—trpes, buildings—just vanished in a great eruption of smoke and flame. When'we flew back over the places hit there was nothing left except huge craters, which could clearly be seen from the great altitude at which we were flying.” . • , , A bomber pilot flying at a lower level said his machine bucked like, a colt when the explosion .blast caught the plane. , ■ : . The bombs contain explosives of tremendous power, and it is believed the Japanese would have. to carry bombs four times their size to get the same effect.
