U.S. BOMBING RAID
JAP. BASE IN BURMA CITY & DROME TARGETS (10.30 a.m.) CHUNGKING, Aug. 31. Ma.ior-General Stilwell, in a communique, said that American bombers raided Myitkyina, Burma, and started three large fires in the city. They scored direct hits on the aerodrome and dispersal areas and droped antipersonnel bombs on runways and barracks. None of the planes or personnel were lost. This raid is in addition to those reported by American headquarters at New Delhi in which American and Royal Air Force fighters and medium bombers blasted Myitkyina during the two previous days, ruining extensive aerodrome repairs made by the JapanesP A communique issued at New Delhi states: “Yesterday the Royal Air Force bombed Japanese river craft at Ak.yab. Low-level attacks were made on one steamer which was seen to be sinking. Some aircraft returned to their base without carrying out their mission owing to bad weather.” The Chinese forces reoccupied Sucgyang, destroying half the Japanese defenders and driving the remainder eastward.
