Mr. and Mrs. J. Gardner, Hihiroroa station, are the guests of the latter’s mother, Mrs. G. I. Falkiner, Wainui Beach. Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Dobson, Rere, were the week-end guests of Mrs. H. E. Cave at Wainui Beach, Mrs. P. Sibley, Harris street, accompanied by her children, is the guest of Miss A. Cradock, at Wainui Beach. Mrs. K. F. Reed, Wainui road, accompanied by Mißs P. Reed, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Ronald Douglas, “Glenogle," Hastings. , Miss I. Barwick, who is a trainee at the Wellington dental clinic, is spending her vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. Barwick, Kelvin road.
Miss J. Bennett, who is a student at the Wellington Teachers’ Training College, is spending her vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Bennett, Kelvin road. ENGAGEMENT Edwards—Mcl.auchlan.—An engagement is announced between William, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Edwards, Aberdeen road, and Gwen, only daughter of Mrs. F. McLauchlan, Sydney, and the late Mr. W. J. McLauchlan.
FOR PATRIOTIC PURPOSES The funds of the Whataupoko sub-zone benefited as the result of a very successful bridge and mah-jongg tea held yesterday afternoon. Mrs. F. W. Noian had placed her home in Russell street at the disposal of the promotors, and play was enjoyed at 10 tables arranged in the flower-decked rooms. The committee responsible for the successful organisation of the function included Mesdamcs E. Woodrow, W. Carruthers, L. T. Burnard, W. Neal, A. F. Excell. H. R. Kendon, H. L. Primrose, R. J. Clark, and H. B. Tyerman. FIRESIDE CLUB
A pleasant and profitable time was spent by the members at the monthly meeting oi the Methodist Fireside Club, held at the home of Mrs. O. J. Elliott. Stout street, on Saturday afternoon. Business was dealt with under the direction of one of the vicepresidents, Mrs. E. McCulloch. A most interesting talk on mission work in Manchurin was given by Mrs. W. Miskelly, to whom a warm vote of thanks was accorded on the motion of Mrs. A. Biakemore. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Elliott, assisted by Mrs. S. R. Vincent. LITERARY CIRCLE MEETS The study of the works of American writers proved a source of interest at the well-attended monthly meeting of the literary circle of the Gisborne Women’s Club, held in •the club rooms yesterday afternoon. Business was dealt with under the direction of the convener, Mrs. G. S. Vincent. Readings, covering a wide field, were contributed by the following members:—Mrs. E. Trowel 1, ’’Soap Suds,” from “Under Country Skies,” by Grace Richmond; Miss McLean, “A Tribute to the British Press,” by Alice S. Wright: Mrs. Alexander, “How the Widow Won the Deacon,” by W. J. Lampton: Mrs. N. Hooper. “Seventeen,” from “Jane.'’ by Booth Tarkington; Mrs. H. Gilmer. "My Life and Work.” by Henry Ford; Mrs. Hugh Jones, "The Widows’s Protest,” by Mark Twain; Mrs. M. Lawless, “The Witch’s Daughter,” by Whittier; Mrs. M. Woodward, "A Deception," a sketch by Mark Twain ; Mrs. V: -Clement, “An American Speech,”’ by Eaurenee Hunt; Mrs. H. Holmes, “Stonehenge,” from “When Travelling with a Friend Through England,” byEmerson; Mrs. F. R. Hill, “Curing a Cold,” by Mark Twain; Mrs. G. S. Vincent, "Pomona Takes a Bridal Trip,” from "Rudder Grange,” by Frank Stockton. Humour was set down as the subject for study next month. ./ Afternoon tea was served at the close of the meeting under the supervision of Mrs. F. R. Hill.
