BIG RUGBY SCORE

GUARD DEFEAT INFANTRY CLOSE AIR FORCE GAME Saturday afternoon proved ideal for Rugby on the Oval and in the Poverty Bay Rugby Union’s competition games Home Guard put up a big score against Independent Infantry on No. 2 ground, while the two Air Force teams played a very even match resulting in a win for the A’s. Two Air Force Teams Air Force A were not nearly so dangerous as usual in their game against their B team, hut the deadly tackling of the B men had some bearing on the failure of the A’s to put up a bigger score than 11 points to five. The first naif ended with no score. The Air Force backs made some very likely runs, but they were being robbed of their usual penetration by being forced to run across the field, and good tackling by the B’s kept them out. It was not long in the second sped! before Warren, the A’s half-back, secured the ball from a serum and raced over for a good try, which was converted. The B’s rallied, and McDonald scored to convert his own try. The scores remained even until late in the game, when Churchill and Warren scored further tries, neither of which was converted, the final score being 11 points to 5 in favour of Air Force A'. Mr. Hunter was the referee. Home Guard and Infantry The i game between Home Guard ami Infantry!, was played at a fast pace. No fewer than {seven tries were scored during tin afternoon, Reg-McKinley converting five of them. The game had been in progress only a few minutes when McKinley made a long run to be forced out near the goal line. From a ruck Lee whipped the ball out to McKinley, to Henderson, who scored. McKinley converted with a nice kick. Soon after Infantry mulled, and Moore ran strongly along the touch line to score and converted his own try. The red forwards, urged on by Buckingham, strove ,to make their way upficld, but McKinley picked up the ball, bullocked his way past a few players, and sent it on to Kane, who gained a lot of ground before sending on for Lee to transfer to Quinn. The speedy winger made no bones about it, and McKinley converted. Half-time was whistled with the score 15—nil in favour of Home Guard. After to minutes' play Lee picked up and kicked over the full-back's head. In the race for the ball, Kane scored and McKinley again converted After a smart piece of work by McKinley, Henderson scored his second try and McKinley converted. Infantry's only try came when M. Lincoln (licked up and scored near the touch line as he was securely tackled by Thomson. Following a forward scramble, Lee scored and the final score was 28 to 3 in favour of the Guard.
