AMUSEMENTS

King’s. —Out of the homely virtues of a group of Welsh mining folk, and out of the modest lives of a few sturdy leaders In their midst, 20th Century-Fox has fashioned a motion picture of great poetic charm and dignity, a film of such power and honesty that it can truly be regarded as an outstanding picture. It is the film version of the Richard Lewellyu best-selling novel, "How Green Was My Valley,” which is now screening at the King’s Theatre. Regent.—lll these days of “here to-day. gone to-morrow,” the crew on "Smilin’ Through,” playing at the Regent Theatre, is certainly a tribute to Jeanette MacDonald’s personality. There was scarcely a person connected with the film who had not been with the star for eight or more years. Rose, Miss MacDonald’s maid, claimed a record of 10 years; Florence, the wardrobe girl, eight. The same held true for Olga, the star’s hairdresser, and for Margaret, her music mixer. Set hands knew the star from "way back when.” Majestic.—The “spring into spring campaign to build up morale commences to-day with a real good laugh from London’s famous "Dame,” Arthur Lucan, in “Mother Riley in Business.’ Another comedy hit. “Reg'lar Fellers,” starß "Alfalfa,” Billy Lee and the Gang. The serial is “Jungle Girl.” An added attraction on the stage each afternoon at 1.30 is the "Kiddie Revue,” presented by pupils from the Maureen Kenney School of Dancing. This is an ideal family programme.
