DIEPPE HOSTAGES SHOT HUNDREDS IMPRISONED GO.llO a.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 30. Although the Germans publicly praised the residents t? Dieppe for their attitude during the recent British commando raid, reports from Paris reveal that the Germans actually shot 11 civilians and imprisoned several hundred immediately after the raid.
This is reported by the New York Times correspondent at Stockholm, who adds that the victims were chosen from previously prepared lists of persons who were likely to sympathise actively with the enemy. Many belonged to prominent Dieppe families. The German casualties in the raid are estimated at COO killed and missing and 2000 wounded.
It is reported from Berlin that after the British raid on Dieppe, the Germans reinforced their Atlantic and English Channel coast defences with new motorised artillery batteries.
