BRISBANE’S ALERT

PEOPLE CALM & CASUAL SYDNEY, Aug. 21. Brisbane,: like Sydney, Newcastle and Townsville, gave no sign of panic during its first air-raid alert on Thursday morning. City streets were promptly cleared by wardens, who found that many people were too casual and had to be shepherded into basements and shelters. Vehicular traffic was stopped, but picture theatres continued after theatre managers interrupted performances to tell audiences sirens had been sounded. Few people left. Some hotels closed. Those which remained open enjoyed good custom. Two minutes after the all-clear, streets were as congested as ever.
