VICTIMS OF U-BOATS

THREE IN ONE NIGHT RENEWED ACTIVITY (9 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Aug. 28. Three ships were torpedoed and sunk, two within the space of four minutes, in one night in the Caribbean Sea in the first large-scale assault since June, when convoying was introduced. They included a medium-sized United States merchant vessel. It is believed that two submarines attacked two vessels travelling closely together. A radio operator explained that the submarines have changed their tactics and now lie in wait for passing vessels, and spring up and make a quick attack and then retire. British planes are co-operating with American army and navy aircraft in the western Atlantic, says a United States Navy Department announcement. It said that British flyers had already engaged .the enemy, althougn no details were given of the action.
