KAITAIA DAMAGE
IMMEDIATE INSPECTION GOVERNMENT HELP (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. An immediate inspection will be made of the damage at Kaitaia by the Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department and the Defence Construction Commissioner, according to an announcement made by the acting Prime Minister, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, to-day. , . , He added that the local district public works engineer had immediately arranged to take emergency action to provide temporary shelters where needed in the shape of tarpaulins and for the men to collect won blown from the roofs. Carpenters were being brought from an aerodrome to make temporary repairs where most urgently required, and other supplies, labour and materials were being arranged. A Treasury Department officer would be sent to Kaitaia to deal with requests for financial assistance. Mr. Sullivan expressed the Government's sympathy with those who suffered loss and injury, especially the relatives of the child who lost his life The New Zealand Red Cross Society has telegraphed its sympathy to the sufferers through the tornado at Kaitaia, intimating that assistance will be available through its disaster relief fund.
