NAZI SHIP DAMAGED
R.A.F. BOMBING ATTACK RUSSIANS RAID REICH (British Official Wireless.) (11 a.m.) ' RUGBY, Aug. 27. Three enemy ships, each of 1500 tons, were severely damaged yesterday morning when Hurricane bombers of the Fighter Command, attacked a convoy of five vessels lying off Dieppe harbour, right under the shore batteries. One smaller ship was also hit. Despite heavy “flak” from the shore, all the planes returned safely. The Air Ministry states: “Soon after midday a squadron of Bostons, escorted by a strong force of fighters, bombed the German airfield at Abbeville. Bursts were seen on the runways and in the dispersal areas. One Boston was hit by anti-aircraft fire and was lost. One member of its crew was killed. The other two were wounded and were rescued from the sea. Fighters had combats with enemy fighters. Three enemy machines were destroyed. Nine Royal Air Force fighters were missing.” The Air Ministry states: “This morning two enemy aircraft dropped bombs at places on the south coast of England. There was a small number of casualties and some damage. One attacking aircraft was destroyed by anti-aircraft lire.” The Berlin radio says that Russian aircraft raided north-eastern and central Germany last night. One penetrated to the outskirts of Berlin.
