New Rail Service
Sir, —The time-table for our Gisborne-Napier-Wellington service as published in Tuesday’s issue leaves much to be desired. The upward run from Wellington is not so bad, as we can get right through in one day, yet that could be improved on. But for the downward run, with the train leaving Gisborne at 10.5 a.m., we cannot get to Wellington in the one day. It means staying the night either in Napier or some other town on the line and catching the express next morning for Wellington. Gisborne wants a right-through service both ways every day and to get from Gisborne to Wellington in one day the train should leave Gisborne at 7 a.m., arriving at Napier about 12.30 p.m., to connect with the Napier express, which should leave Napier at 1 p.m., arriving at Wellington between 7 and 8 p.m. Furthermore, if the train left Gisborne at 7 a.m., Gisborne people could have from 12.30 to 4 p.m. in Napier, arriving back in Gisborne at 9.30 the same day. Seeing that the railway to Gisborne is 40 years later than it should have been, it is surely up to the Chamber of Commerce to press for the most convenient rail service. ROBERT PRESTON. [The correspondent overlooks the fact that the proposed time-table is merely a tentative one pending the completion of work on the line. When the service proper is inaugurated it is expected that all the points made by the correspondent will be taken fully into account. —Ed., Herald.]
