RELIEVED OF OFFICE

U.S. DEFENCE DIRECTOR ACTION BY CONGRESS (Reed. Jan. 10, 2.40 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 9. The House of Representatives has decided to relieve the Mayor of New York, Mr F. H. La Guardia, of the office of Director of National Defence. Members of the House declared they by no means expressed lack of confidence in Mr La Guardia. The step had been taken because the House believed that one man could riot simultaneously handle two such important offices as Mayor of New York and Director of Defence.
