SHORTAGE OF COAL
WARNING TO PUBLIC (Reed. Jan. 10, 9 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 9. The German authorities in Posen and parts of Germany have warned the public to economise in electricity and gas because increasing quantities of coal are required for the army and industry. They declare that the public must be prepared for a rationing of electricity and gas at a moment’s notice. The Times’ Stockholm correspondent says it is generally believed that the coal shortage is due to the Germans’ intense effort to increase the production of oil from coal after the failure of the campaign to capture the Caucasus.
