WOMEN FOR TRAMS
WELLINGTON PROBLEM The increasing shortage of manpower has ..been..’■keenly, felt by-..,the. Wellington Tramways Department,' and a suggestion is that women should be employed to , replace. ; the. ..men. There are 40 men short in thb: service now, and the. military, .drafts will increase the number. Already some trams have to be left in..the sheds for lack of men to man'them, |,_ r .. , The tramway-service .has lost a con-.-sirerable number <JT ifipn v ,and ...wj'U’ lose more, but, although \Vdmen"ha've applied for work, and there would be no difficulty in getting as many ,aS would bring the staff to normal, th'eir use has nof'yet been decided on. It is realised that many new problems would be caused. Men supervisors could not control women as well as women supervisors. Women would require additional accommodation' and facilities, and it is considered that, in the present crowded condition of the trams, women conductors would be at a great disadvantage, as their work includes .other duties besides the collection of fares.-
