NEW YORK BLAZE
LARGE PIER DESTROYED (Reed. Jan. 9,2 p.m.) NEW YORK, .Jan. 8. Hudson River piers on the corner of Forty-third Street in the centre of New York City caught fire early this morning. All New York brigades, aided by fire boat.s worked desperately to prevent the fire spreading. The fire destroyed a large pier owned by the South American and South African Steamship Lines and aRo a number of barges. The Mayor, Mr. F. H. La Guardia, is standing by. Three firemen are missing. An investigation is beingmade.
