WAVELL’S WIDE DUTIES

NORTHERN AUSTRALIA MANY RECRUITS OFFERING SYDNEY, Jan. 0. A statement from Canberra to-day said that the territories under the command of the new Allied Com-mander-in-Chief in the South-west Pacific, General Sir Archibald Wavell, would include the whole of the Eastern Archipelago and take in the north of Australia, but . remainder of the home.defence of the Commonwealth would be under Australian control. Australian liaison officers to General Wavell would be appointed. Many conferences have been held with the Australian Imperial Force officers who have been brought back to the Commonwealth, and the. Government intends to adopt more rigorous and realistic training methods. The Australian Commander-in-Chief in the Middle East, Genaral Sir Thomas Blarney, will forward a panel of names of officers and non-com-missioned officers for selection for return to Australia as instructors. Recruiting for reinforcements for the Australian Imperial Force is going ahead rapidly, although the calling up of militia is heavily draining man-power. A Canberra message states that the rush to join up with the Australian Imperial Force is greater than at any time in the past six months.
