TERRIFIC BATTLE
BRITISH & JAPS. MALAYA RESISTANCE R.A.F. BOMB BANGKOK (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Asßn.) (Reed. Jan. 9, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 8. The Tokio official radio claims that a terrific battle is under way between British and Japanese forces on the border of Perak and Selangor, 250 miles north from Singapore. The statement adds that the encircled British troops are resisting desperately from strongly-fortified defences on the edge of dense jungles. A Tokio broadcast for domestic consumption admitted that the Japanese plane losses in the siege of Hong Kong were 81, which is double the figure previously announced in official international broadcasts. The Berlin radio said the civil population and Government departments were evacuating from Singapore to Java. A Rangoon report says that the Royal Air Force' attacked military objectives at Bangkok yesterday. Huge fires were seen. All the aircraft returned safely.
