: CUSTOMS REVENUE j IMPORT RESTRICTIONS | COLLECTION AT GISBORNE ; BEER EXCISE RECORD | The reaction from import restricj tions appears to be making itself felt | seriously in the collection of customs j dues at Gisborne, the total for Decem- ! ber being only £2932,, as against ; £0449 for December, 1938. Sales tax ! receipts also showed a decrease, ! though not in the same, degree, and | but for a substantial increase in the i beer excise, the aggregate for the j month at Gisborne would have made I a poor showing by comparison with j the same month last year. ! The receipts from beer excise represent £3177, easily the best month’s return under this heading since the slump set in in 1929. The figure was nearly half as great again as for 1938’s December excise. The figures under main heads for I the two Decembers are:—
