FOUGHT IN SPAIN

NEW ZEALAND SERGEANT JOINS UNIT IN LONDON LONDON, Dec. 22. v A New Zealander who fought in the Spanish civil war has been made a sergeant in the anti-tank battery ol the New Zealand unit recruited in London. He is Sergeant Mum MacDonald, of Dunedin. Sergeant MacDonald fought in Spain with the International Brigade, and was wounded in one shoulder at Jarama. He has lectured British Army units on his experiences with tanks in Spain, He said: “In the International Brigade many men who had hardly ever fired a rifle, and knew nothing of the mechanism of firearms, were sent into the line.

"Often when a machine-gun jammed they were helpless, because they knew nothing of how it worked.”
