FORESHORE GALA
WAIKANAE CARNIVAL FAREWELL TO OLD YEAR WAR FUNDS TO BENEFIT R.S.A. SOCIAL WORKERS The opportunity of contributing to patriotic funds, while enjoying an evening of unlimited fun and excitement, will be offered to Gisborne residents to-night by the social committee of the Gisborne Returned Soldiers’ Association, with the co-operation of a number of other bodies. For the occasion, the foreshore at the Waikanae Beach will be transformed into a veritable fairyland of light and colour, and a special display of fireworks has been arranged to round out, at midnight, a programme of high entertainment value.
Traffic in the neighbourhood of the beach will be carefully controlled by the Gisborne Borough Council’s staff, with the aid of members of the Legion of Frontiersmen, who are making this service their contribution to the big patriotic effort. Parking arrangements for cars will be adequate, and the arrangements will be such that no driver should find difficulty in getting clear of the park at any time.
Children are to be admitted free to the promenade and the entertainment area, and a small charge will be made to adults for admission. It is expected that the receipts from the adult admission charges, supplemented by the earnings of a number of special attractions in the entertainment area, will enable the organisers to hand a substantial sum to the Provincial Patriotic Council for disbursement on behalf of district men and women engaged in their country’s service in connection with the war.
It is emphasised that the whole of the proceeds of the effort will be devoted to patriotic purposes, the organisers having undertaken to treat this carnival as their first major effort in support of war-time objectives.
