EXPORT OF PELTS
GOVERNMENT CONTROL EXCESS PRICE PROVISO London business interests are reported to be concerned over New Zealand regulations regarding the sale of pelts for export during the war jreriod. “The export of pelts from New Zealand' can only be effected under Government permit,” states one firm in its market circular and it is understood that the authorities will issue at present only such permits provided that vendor's pay over to the New Zealand Government the whole of the excess in price over September 1 values. “The full effect of this drastic restriction in trading cannot be readily calculated. Under these circumstances vendors can have no interest in selling their products at anything above pre-war level. “Increases in overhead charges and labour and material costs such as usually accompany war conditions presumably will have to be found by freezing companies and’ fellmongers without any prospect of being able to recoup themselves by Lighter returns, or else will have co be passed back to the live-stock producer in the shape of a lower price for the animal.
“Until the repercussions of the new regulation are more clearly defined freezing companies, no doubt, will act cautiously in their valuation of pelts for the new season.”
